A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that is caused when the brain moves around in the skull and causes the brain to bruise. The word concussion comes from the Latin words concutere ("to shake violently") and concussus ("action of striking together"). Concussions have many physical and emotional symptoms. People who have suffered a concussion in the past are more likely to suffer another one.

Repeated concussions can cause multiple can cause many other diseases later in life such as dementia, Parkinson's disease, depression, and Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. Suffering another concussion before you recover from a concussion could lead to Second-impact syndrome, which is often fatal and most who survive are severely disabled.

CTE, or Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, is a progressive degenerative disease that can only be diagnosed after someone has died. CTE is most common in athletes that have played American Football and other contact sports. People with CTE show symptoms of memory loss, aggression, confusion and depression. One of the most famous NFL players who has been diagnosed with CTE is former linebacker Junior Seau, who committed suicide in 2012.

The NFL, or the National Football League, is a professional American Football league that was created in 1920 and merged with the American Football League in 1966. The NFL is the most popular American Football league. American Football is a high contact sport that can cause many injuries, head injuries being one of the multiple injuries that can be caused by the contact. Due to the NFL being so popular, there has been controversy about player safety in the NFL.

Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, has been adding and changing rules to improve player safety. For example, it is illegal to deliver "a blow with the top crown of his helmet against an opponent when both players are clearly outside of the tackle box." Hitting a player helmet to helmet will cause a 15 yard penalty and the NFL will give the player a large fine and/or suspend them for a short amount of games. The NFL is also trying to teach children how to tackle properly in a program called "Heads up!" football.

  • In the summer of 2013, the NFL agreed with a $765 million settlement in a concussion lawsuit with more than 4,500 former players. Almost 18,000 players will former players will be eligible for funds to help pay for their medical bills. At most, former players will get $5 million for men with Alzheimer's disease, $4 million for those diagnosed after their deaths with CTE, and $3 million for players with dementia.
  • The NFL and General Electric partnered with a 5 year $50 million project to develop technology to predict head injuries, show how severe the injury is, and to make better protective material.
  • The Cleveland Clinic Center for Spine Health released a study comparing leather helmets to modern helmets. The leather helmets at times had better protection against concussive hits. Modern helmets were originally made to prevent skull fractures.
