Tina Packer, the author of “Women of Will” and the artistic director of Shakespeare & Company, links Shakespeare’s female heroines to modern day feminism. She argues that Shakespeare portrays women in a new light than traditionally portrayed in other works of that time, and as well as in the reality of that time. Beatrice, from Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, possessed fierce characteristics, such as blunt honesty and intense independence, that made her a character ahead of her own time. As Shakespeare’s career progressed, he developed a knack for writing multi-dimensional female characters. Shakespeare wrote about women who were equal to men, not socially, but in that women were humans too; women became equal partners in relationships in Shakespeare’s plays. Shakespeare proves his relevance in modern day feminism by presenting female characters in ways that were ahead of his time.
