A view of Eden
My favorite part of the story was when Spaz, Ryter, and Bean got to Eden and how surprised they are at the beauty of the place. I enjoyed this part of the story because all of their problems seemed to be being solved. It is at this point that I knew Bean would be saved.
I would recommend this to people who like end-of-the-world kind of books. I would also recommend this book to my friends and my mom who like dystopian stories. This book includes very suspenseful parts, such as the part with the Monkey Boys, so you have to be a person who likes suspense. It also has lots of clues and hints to what will happen at the end. There is one major plot twist at the end (when Spaz finds out who his father really is) which will throw a lot of people off just like it did me.
Spaz in the Urb
In the beginning, Spaz was just like everyone else in the world, not too caring for anyone but themselves, and their gang. He was really just a follower. But then he found out that Bean was sick and he had to have the courage to break away from the gang. The get to Bean and to save her, Spaz had to find the part of himself that was a leader instead of a follower. As the story goes on, he and the old man, Ryter, become friends, and in the end, Spaz is devastated to see Ryter being killed.
The theme of this book in my opinion is having the courage overcome adversity. Spaz has to face many difficulties. One was the choices he made was to go get Bean instead of staying in the gang. This decision could have led to Spaz being cancelled or kicked out of the gang. Spaz also had to travel through the Forbidden Zone to get to Bean and face other gangs including the Monkey Boys who tried to kill him. Spaz also showed courage at the end of the story when he chose to "write" the last book.
The story takes place 1,000 in the future after a big earthquake. The Urb has a society that is lives in poverty and is made up of gangs. Books don't exist. People don't have memories, instead they have mind probes that put experiences into your head. The main character, Spaz, can't use the probes because he has epilepsy. He mets an old man, Ryter, when he tries to steal from him. They are trying to get to Spaz's little sister, Bean, to Eden because she has leukemia. Eden is a the area where the genetically improved, or "proovs" live. They finally get to her and take her to Eden with a proov girl, Lanaya, they met and the rulers of Eden heal her the best they can. they get kicked out because normals are not allowed in Eden. Spaz, at the end, with Ryter's encouragement begins to write a book. Spaz has realized that he is "the last book in the universe".
