Paronychia - usually contains

pus, caused by trauma, skin damage and infection

Onychomycosis

BUT FIRST...LETS DISCOVER SOME WEIRD AND WONDERFUL NAIL FACTS.....

Nails on longer fingers grow faster than nails on short fingers. Nails also grow faster on your dominant hand.

Massaging your finger tips will stimulate nail growth. So does typing on a keyboard.

Nails grow faster in warm sunny climates than in cold dark places. If you must bite your nails, move to Southern California.

MITOSIS= THE PROCESS OF CELL DIVISION

http://www.johnkyrk.com/mitosis.html

The nail plate and nail bed are formed here.

Keratin is the epidermal protein found in both the skin, hair and nail plate.

Hair and nails on humans tend to become dry and brittle, because the dead keratin is being pushed to great lengths.

Eating foods like gelatin can keep hair and nails moist and healthy.

In general, the thicker the layer of keratin, the healthier the hair or nail is, because the dead cells outside protect the living cells at the core.

A cow's skin, fur, nails, hooves, horns, and teeth all contain keratin.!!!

WELL DONE....KEEP UP

THE REVISION!

NOW LETS LOOK AT WHAT THE NAIL ANATOMY INCLUDES.....

TAKE NOTE! WHERE YOU SEE THIS SYMBOL

(SOMETIMES NOT SO OBVIOUS,,:-) IT REPRESENTS AN IMPORTANT POINT YOU WILL BE LATER QUIZZED ON!!!)

GUESS THE CONTRA-INDICATION

DESCRIBE AND IDENTIFY, USING CORRECT

SPELLINGS WHERE POSSIBLE

Recap and Review!

WHAT AM I?

CONTRA-INDICATIONS TO MANICURE!

Cause - Viral infection.

Appearance - Raised lump with a rough surface which is skin colour or slightly darker

CAN YOU RECALL WHAT I AM?

WHAT CAN YOU

REMEMBER?

Cause -Usually damage to the nail, however could be related to illness.

Appearance - Nail will lift slightly from the nail bed and will appear a creamy, yellow colour where it has lifted.

well done...you have discovered the anatomy of the nail....QUIZ TIME!!

WELL DONE.....LETS REVIEW WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED SO FAR....

  • The Lunula (half moon)

This is located at the base of the nail plate and is the pearly crescent shaped section of the nail plate.

It is the only visible portion of the matrix.

The Nail matrix

This is the only living reproducing portion of the nail

It is here at the matrix the at all new cells form within the germinative layer of the skin, through the process mitosis.

The matrix contains nerves, lymph and blood vessels and the nail root originates form the matrix area.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS FORMED HERE?

LABEL YOUR DIAGRAM

The nail plate

It consists of compressed dead keratinised cells.

These cells lie in three layers held together with a minimum of moisture and fat, which tends to decrease with age, just as the skin does.

A special cement like substance which the cells secrete themselves bind them together to form a hardened translucent surface which we call the nail plate

YOU EACH HAVE 10 MINS TO RESEARCH THE "FLASHCARDS".

USING YOUR DIAGRAM, FEEDBACK TO YOUR PEERS THE POSITION AND FUNCTION OF EACH

  • The Nail bed

The nail bed is a continuation of the matrix and is similar in many ways to ordinary skin.

  • The nail bed is supplied with many blood vessels, which provide the nourishment necessary for the continued growth of the nail, along with an abundant supply of nerves.

WHAT IS KERATIN AND WHERE CAN IT BE FOUND?

The Nail wall

Are the folds of skin, which overlap the sides of the nail; it forms the frame to the nail and provides protection from physical harm.

The nail groove

As the nail grows forward it moves along the nail grooves at the side of the nail which hold the nail in place, keeping it parallel ..

(nail biters often end up with "fan or spoon" shaped nails as

their "grooves" are bitten away!!)

The free edge

Is the portion of the nail plate, which extends beyond the fingertip. Its function is to protect the fingertips from physical harm.

NEXT WEEK WE WILL LEARN

ABOUT THE BONES OF THE HANDS AND ARMS.

YOUR HOMEWORK IS TO RESEARCH HOW MANY PHALANGES ARE IN THE HAND!

what can you remember?
