Finally, sick and tired of waiting, Hercules shoots the deer one day with an arrow, merely wounding it. However, after carrying it down a mountain, he is confronted by Artemis, who is enraged that he dare hurt her beloved pet. Hercules then goes on to explain that he must complete these tasks, and Artemis calms down. She heals the deer and allows Hercules to take it, so that he may move on to his 4th task.
Capturing the Hind alive and unarmed proved to be a diffucult task for many reasons:
Hercules chases after Hind for over a year, coming close to catching it but everytime, it slips out of his grasp.
However, Eurystheus demanded Hercules bring him the deer back alive, and Artemis did not like the idea of Hercules hurting her deer.

As one of Hercules 12 labors given to him by Eurystheus, his third task was to capture the Ceryneian Hind of Artemis. It was one of the first five hinds (a hind being a red deer) that Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt, had ever caught. It was also rumored to have solid gold horns.
