Language
Human Sciences
What are Human Sciences?
The study and interpretation of the experiences, activities, constructs, and artifacts associated with human beings.
What is the purpose of Human Science?
To explain human behavior by formulating methods in which to predict, study, and modify it, then to use the gathered data to
correct the predicted societal
discrepancies
What is Language?
The human ability to acquire and use complex systems of communication, and a language that is literary, mathematical, symbolic, etc. is any specific example of such a system.
What is the purpose of Language?
Serves as an outlet in which to communicate ideas, thoughts, opinions, and observations
with others in a comprehensive way. This
could be through spoken/written word,
signing, body movements, all with their
own subcategories such as jargon and shorthand.

CONCLUSION
- Human science bridges the gap between what we know scientifically and how that affects us all emotionally
- e.g. Natural science tells us we need water to survive and human science tells us how we feel when deprived or given this resource and how we can get more water to those who need it
- Inspires the curiosity about how other people live or feel needed to introduce empathy
- Encourages empathy and open-mindedness
- Solves complex social issues that concern and affect large populations of people
- The way we speak, not just the language we speak, affects our habitual natures
- note: it has not been proven that speaking a certain language affects the learning process, though it was tested in the 1940s by Benjamin Lee Whorf
- "Languages differ essentially in what they must covey and not in what they may convey."
- Roman Jakobson
- Language provides for a deeper understanding of ideas expressed through time as vocabulary adapts and we adapt with it
- Custom is able to coincide with individuality through language
WOK
AOK
The Areas of Knowledge and Ways of Knowledge that make up Theory of Knowledge are rather subjective summations of human consciousness, a small categorization of a topic with infinite subcategories, Nevertheless, Human Science and Language are the AOK and WOK I feel best represent what TOK as a whole because they are concepts I feel embody the human spirit and transmit that spirit into communicative data that can be shared between people, no matter how different.
Negative
- Language is selective and many important points of understanding get lost in translation
- Specific jargon can only be used by certain
people, especially if a degree is involved
- i.e. doctors use a lot of anagrams
- Differing or opposing customs may make it difficult to trust the intellect or moral judgement of the opposing language
- An uncertain science
- It is hard to apply the scientific method to human sciences with so many variables at play
- Some views of human science is that it is a manipulate of people to act a certain way for the benefit of uniformity disguised as unity
- i.e. people have free will but a free will defined by human scientists
- It is hard to distinguish cause from causation, and sometimes this is because there are no rules to explain some human phenomena other than by the chicken and egg theory
- Do you have a lot of shares because you are rich, or are you rich because you have a lot of shares?
