Engage and motivate student learning

In order to engage and motivate students; I would incorporate technology into the curriculum. For example; Using an interactive white board. Mead, L, 2012 para 1, states that, "Interactive white boards are an effective tool for the engagement and motivation of students with learning difficulties and disabilities" and not just those who are "regular learners." All students need to learn and this is the best way to motivate and engage all students at once. I would also have the students to set goals for the class. Last but not least, I would set up a buddy system which will help build connections between peers and enable them to engage in their work and be motivated while doing so.

Differentiation and Universal Design for Learning

Presenting new information/demostrating prior knowledge

I will present this information using "an explicit instruction lesson plan format, for example, might outline the step-by-step details of what the teacher will say or do, how the skill will be demonstrated, what the guided and independent practice will look like, and other elements of the lesson" (Puckett, 2013 sec 4.2). I could also do a video which would help keep the students attention. Learning new things can be scary and hard. The ways that I've listed will make things easier for the students to grasp.

Prior knowledge- My students will demonstrate their background knowlege with the use of surveys and/or pretests. This is so that I can see where the students stand and what their learning level will be before we start a lesson or unit.

Compare UDL and Differentiation

Contrast UDL and Differentiation

  • The significance of both is to help students meet their learning needs with in there level.
  • Give students access to both high-quality content and instruction.
  • Emphasize on both strategic learning and critical thinking skills
  • They accommodate diverse learners.

UDL establishes accommodations by accessing the students work before beginning new instruction. While differentiation accommodates the student's learning differences when they arise. That being said, UDL also provides different tools that can be used specifically for those who are disabled. This is so they can learn to be independant which inturn, minimizes the use for differentiation.

How I plan to blend these concepts

I envision that I will implement these concepts to instill growth and academic success by meeting them at their own level and to include them in the learning process. I will also use structure within the activities to allow for flexibility and help with a diverse learning style.
