Chapter 7
Supten chases after French architect after he tries to escape. While doing this....
During this time Sutpen gives some of his own backstory
This is told to Compson
reconveyed to Shreve
Supten was born in a log cabin in modern day West Virginia
drunken father
who takes the family to a plantation in Virginia where he learns the difference between men who own things and those who dont
he ran away from home at 14 and by 20 was the overseer of a plantation in the Caribbean
after putting down a slave revolt he finds himself engaged to the owners daughter, who has his son Charles Bon
after finding out she was part negro he left them and took 20 slaves and fleed to Jefferson
After having his break wit Henry he tries to break up the marriage between Judith and Bon, Henry in his jealousy proceeded to kill Bon
When Supten returns home he finds his family in shambles and his plantation unfixable so he starts to sleep with Milly who is Wash jones 15 yr. old grand daughter
Jones was fine with this even when Supten got her pregnant but when he insults Milly...
Jones cuts him down with a scythe
Before the search party can take in Jones he commits suicide using a butchers knife
Quentin and Shreve go to bed and begin to imagine what Bon’s life must have been like throughout this story
they imagine his mother is bitter and has told Bon the story of his deserting father many times
they imagine Bon and his mother recieved a lot of money through a lawyer and that Bon wastes it on women, gambling horses, clothes, and alcohol
They picture Bon's mother finding out about his octoroon wife and his son and accepting it
They also envision Bon's mother wanting to hide his father's identity from him
Quentin and Shreve continue to create situation that must have actually happened such as Henry meeting Bon and Bon visiting Sutpen’s Hundred
They even recount Sutpen revealing to Henry that Bon is his brother.
Their speculations become so specific they even imagine Bon saving Henry in battle
According to their story Bon comes to believe that the incest of his marrying Judith doesn’t bother Henry as much as Bon’s being part black does
When they are done with their tale of Bon’s perspective Shreve recounts Quentin’s visit of Sutpen’s Hundred.
They determine that Bon knew Henry was going to kill him so he left a picture of his octoroon “wife” and son in his pocket where he normally kept Judith’s picture in order to inform her of his unfaithfulness
After coming to this conclusion Quentin and Shreve go to sleep
Quentin was thinking about the night in September 1909
midnight when he arrives at the house he manages to sneak into the window
Clytie makes a grab at her, but Rosa slaps her away
they find Henry in the house who came home to die
three months later they call the ambulance to save Henry
After seeing the ambulance Clytie burned down the house leaving only Jim Bond alive
Shreve asks Quentin one final question: "Why do you hate the South?" Immediately, defensively, Quentin replies "I don't hate it," then thinks to himself over and over: "I don't! I don't hate it! I don't hate it!"
