- The Hiwassee River Basin is the only place in N.C. that federally endangered green pitcher plant , it has upright , tubular that trap insects it digests.
- The Hiwassee River Basin contains many plants and animals species. There is an 2-foot long fish is color is olive green with a striking,crimson tail and a distinctive,sick-shaped fin on its back.
- Another animals is the hellbender. Is a large aquatic salamander. It is found at the Hiwassaee river Basin and other Western North Carolina basins.

North Georgia and west North Carolina
N.C. section includes Hiwassee, Nottely, and Valley rivers.
The Hiwassee name comes from the Cherokee word “ayuhwasi” which means savanna or meadow.
- Most of the water in this river basin have high water quality. However, two streams are impaired and three streams are threatened.
- The main polluntant of concern is sediment. The sediment is derived from the following activities: agriculture, mining, urban development, and silviculture.
- The State Funds are helping the cause.
