  • Lack of funding = Lack in quality of teachers and resources/materials
  • So what can be done?
  • Vote and advocate for local and state politicians whose platform is to reform education and reduce, if not remove, the funding gap.
  • Curtis Graham described the education inequality epidemic best by saying, "For most kids a solid education is perhaps their only chance to get off the streets, out of the city so that they can create a better situation for their own kids. But if these inner city kids aren't given the same educational opportunities as other kids, then they never get out and the problem just grows".

Inequality in Quality of Education by Gabriel Glaser

Introduction

Lack in Funding, Teacher Quality, and Resource Quality

  • Negative attribute of the inner city = lack in quality of education
  • A drastic difference in test scores and graduation rates exists between urban and suburban students.
  • Ex: 47% difference in graduation rates between urban and suburban schools in Baltimore, MD metropolitan area.
  • What is the reason for this difference?
  • Answer: Inner city students do not receive the same quality of teaching and materials that children in suburban America receive.
  • Why? Because of lack of funding.

Lack of Funding

  • The backbone to this inequality in education is the fact that inner city schools receive significantly less funding than suburban schools.
  • Funding relies heavily on property taxes
  • 43.9% of all school funding comes from property taxes
  • The reason for there being minimal property values is because inner city school districts are normally stricken by poverty, which means that taxes are not high.
  • The funding gap is prevalent because it in turn affects the achievement gap by resulting in there being a lack of quality in teachers and resources in inner city schools.

Inner city schools do not receive the same funding which results in the quality of learning and opportunity not being equal

Lack in Teacher Quality

Inequality in Education Affects the Poverty Cycle

If inner city students are dropping out of school, then it will eventually lead to the poorer urban areas to never experience improvements socioeconomically and the inner city becomes constantly worse

Lack of quality in teaching and materials in the inner city education system has led to discouragement in students

  • Lack of funding = Teachers being paid less
  • In 2013, the National Council on Teacher Quality released a chart exposing the fact that equally qualified urban teachers do not receive on average the same salary as suburban teachers
  • Ex: In the Chicago metro area, teachers who taught in urban school districts such as Palatine CCSD 15 received around $40,831, while teachers in suburban districts like Township HSD 211 received on average $51,040, for their first year salary.
  • Because urban teaching salaries are significantly less than suburban salaries, it discourages people from wanting to teach in the inner city, which creates a decrease in the teacher work force for inner city schools.
  • Decrease in work force = Quality of teaching being lowered/Qualifications being lowered

Because students are not motivated to learn or preform well in school, they have a tendency to drop out

Lack in Resource Quality

Conclusion

  • It requires money to provide students with modern textbooks and technology for school.
  • By not being sufficiently funded, urban school districts are left in the past with outdated resources, and the students are the ones who suffer.
  • Most of the time, what is lacking the most in inner city schools are resources to properly furnish science labs.
  • Many inner city school districts feel as though they are always in a constant game of catch up with suburban schools to keep up with nation and statewide standards.
