Attributes - why are they important?

CV Form - Bronze

The CARL Framework

CARL = Context, Action, Result, Learning.

SMART Objectives

Using the CARL framework is a good way to structure your statement. CARL allows you to give full evidence for each attribute:

Context: Set the scene for the reader and explain the situation.

Action: Explain what action you personally took in the situation. What did you do?

Result: What did you achieve as a result? For example, gaining a high score for a presentation, getting positive feedback, or achieving a target.

Learning: Show what you learned or gained from this experience.

Writing your submissions

The UEA Award forms have two main sections of writing:

'What did you do?' section (activities description)

Another form to write up is your career management progress form. This form asks you to write about what you have learned from your career management activities, and what your future objectives are as a result.

Objectives should be SMART:

career management activities, and what your future objectives are as a result.

Specific [Described in specific terms]

Measureable [Able to be measured]

Assignable [‘Owned’ by or assigned to someone]

Realistic [Achievable]

Timed [Linked to a deadline]

CV section - ‘write a short statement that might be used in a CV, summarising your experience and skills gained overall from this activity.’

Checking and Validation

  • Certain forms require validation e.g. checking with managers/ supervisors/ referees, looking at e:Vision.

  • We need to rely on what you’ve written to judge the quality.

  • We will be looking at this in a similar way to employers to see how much you’ve gained from your experience.

  • It may be ‘pinged back’ to you if we feel more thought is needed or you could develop it further > status ‘Your Action Required.’

UEA Award & FMH

Confirming activity details - 'Academic' and 'Career Management' categories.

Summative Academic activities are normally checked using e:Vision.

Formative Academic activities will require an adviser or lecturer's contact details who can confirm the work.

Career Management activities don't require a referee. Instead, they are approved solely by the quality of what you've written.

Career Management Progress forms are approved by a Careers Adviser based off of the quality of the submission.
