Henry David Thoreau
- Thoreau believed that man derived his strength from contact with nature.
- His influences led to the creation of Yellowstone National Park in 1872, Yellowstone was the first national park in the world.
- Thoreau was an author, poet, and natural philosopher. He was a leading figure in Transcendentalist
John Muir
- These were the people who wanted change in our country. They were disgusted by the waste of our natural resources that was going on at this time and feared they would run out. Many of history's most powerful and influential speakers were conservationists.
- Examples of these conservationists were Henry David Thoreau and John Muir.
Reasons for Reformation
- In the late 1800's to early 1900's, many landowners, mining companies, entrepreneurs, etc. were very wasteful in natural resources.
- Many Americans, later called conservationists, were upset and thought that the natural resources were being wasted too much and feared for future generations, so they spoke out and wanted federal supervision of these companies and wanted the government to take action to help preserve the environment and our natural resources.
- National Parks were created in the late 1800s to protect the wildlife and natural resources throughout the nation.
- John Muir was a conservationist who sought to see the nations wildlife and natural resources preserved. He helped in the establishment of Yosemite National Park.
- During Theodore Roosevelt's presidency five National Parks were established.
