- Catalonia is cut off from the rest of Republican Spain, as Nationalist troops take the Mediterranean coastal town of Vinaroz.

- Bombing of the Basque capital of Guernica by German airplanes. The attack was on civilians, rather than the military.
- La ciudad fue destruida.
July 19, 1936
- The military is defeated in Madrid and Barcelona.
- The rebels take over Morocco, Galicia, Navarre, Old Castile and Seville.
- The intended leader of the coup, General Sanjurjo, is killed in a plane crash.
