Sir Ambrose Shea had entered the House of the Assembly in 1848. There, he quickly earned respect and became a brilliant orator. In the year 1855, he was named "Speaker of the Assembly". He held the office for the next six years.

Sir Ambrose Shea was once the Governor of the Bahamas. He was a business and political figure in Colonial Newfoundland. Shea was also one of the two delegates from Newfoundland who attended the Québec Confrence that had later lead to Confederation.
Sir Ambrose Shea was born in St. John, Newfoundland on September 17, 1815. He died on July 30, 1905. He was 89 years old when he died.
