Connections
Statistics/ Connections with the world today
- The amount of time people spend on social media is constantly increasing.
- Teens spend up to nine hours a day on social media.
- Karl Marx believed in communism over capitalism. In communist countries such as Cuba, people have only received access to cellphones 9 years ago and continue to struggle with having access to cellphones today.
- Teens who spend more time on social networks such as Instagram, Snapchat, or Twitter are more likely to suffer from a mental health problem.
- Almost three-quarters of teens have access to a phone, while 12% of teens say they do not have access to a cell phone. This resembles that teens who do go on social media and use cell phones are the more dominant ideology.
Health and Wellness
- Relates to mental health
- Social media has influenced us to look or behave a certain way
- Loss of identity takes a toll on an individuals mindset
- Can lead to depression, anxiety, suicide, and other mental health issues
Example #4
Marxist Approach
People in today's society have become so emotionally detached from reality, and so invested in the obvious value of technology.
People and the world they live in tend to become consumed by technology, and emotionally isolate themselves from others.
Example #3
Girl with plastic surgery
Example #2
People put a high value on materialistic
things like phones.
- high value on technology- people tend to
lose themselves and forget what is really important in life (only realize when it is too late)
- they start to feel trapped, because they give technology the power to control them
- become alienated from each other, rely on technology more than people (bad for mental health, social skills)
Example #1
The topic of suicide was very incidental to Marx's
deepest interest which is the social conditions that
restrain human freedom.
Individuals who did not "fit in" with the rest of society were alienated and considered less than
other individuals.
In this case, a character was so disconnected with the rest of society, which resulted in suicide.
By: Catrina, Faith, Gillian, and Sandra
Other characters felt that it was more important to film her suicide, than to help someone in need.
Characters who were not intrigued by social media and technology were less dominant than others.
What is the Marxist Approach?
- Based on the political theory of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engles.
- Focuses on the role of power, money, and politics in society
- Power and inequality bring change in society due to:
- Dominant groups taking advantage of the minority
- They influence the behaviour of people
- Reflects on class struggle and materialism
- Three main theories that are incorporated in Marxism
- Theory of alienation
- Theory of labour
- Theory of materialism
