A supervisor should:
- Be signed off to at least level C or equivalent
- Be able to demonstrate ongoing practice and CPD
- Be able to teach the knowledge and skills required or identify competencies
- Anyone using the framework will need a supervisor to sign off their competencies
- It is the employer's responsibility to ensure adequate supervision is in place, delivered by an appropriately competent supervisor
- If none are present within your organisation then external supervision should be arranged
The framework can be used in supervision to support:

The curriculum guidelines
The guidelines are designed to be:
Comprehensive
Specific
Universal
- The competency framework is made up of four levels: A, B, C and D
- These correspond to the levels used in the IDF (assistant, foundation, specialist and consultant)
- Level C contains three additional sub-levels: emerging specialist, specialist and highly specialist
- Integration of all related knowledge, skills and practical experience required to carry out your role
- Regardless of training, competency will grow through experience and through your own ability to learn and adapt
- Theory of dysphagia, including anatomy, physiology, assessment and management strategies
- Knowledge is learnt by reading, attending lectures, supervision and discussion
- To establish competence, knowledge will be demonstrated
Golden threads:
- Person-centred care
- Evidence-based practice
- Clinical decision making
