Why was he accused of this crime?

A witness put him at the scene of the crime. The police searched his house and found a loose razor blade and shoes with blood splatter. (Wikipedia)

He was executed on September 6, 1952 so he was never able to prove his own innocence. It wasn't until 46 years later in 1998 when his conviction was nullified because his case was "demonstrably flawed". His wife and three children were awarded with $725,000 dollars. (Stephen Khan/The Guardian)
