“In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility -- I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it. And the glow from that fire can truly light the world.

And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.

My fellow citizens of the world, ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.”

PATHOS

The speaker makes an appeal that affects the mood (emotion) of the audience. The audience wants to listen to the speaker because of the emotional tie that is created.

Emotional Appeals

The speaker must match their emotional appeal to the audience, therefore, the audience is an important aspect of speech giving and analysis.

Things to Consider

Who is the speaker? Do they have a connection to the topic? Will they benefit from your decision in anyway?

What is the occasion? Is there a direct connection between the day/month/year/time of the speech and the topic?

Who is in the audience? Is the speaker surrounded by people who agree or disagree?

What is the purpose of the speech? What does the speaker hope will come of the speech?

What is the subject? Could there be an inherent bias in the subject?

What is the speaker's tone? Could that positively/negatively affect the listener?

Objective

The speaker makes an appeal based on credibility. Ethos calls on the audience to accept the information or position of the speaker because they have the education, experience, or overall ability to know what is acceptable knowledge.
