Health effects of coal mining:

Mountain Top Removal in Appalachia

Mountain Top Removal Mining:

  • Practice of removing the tops of mountains to access small seams of coal hundreds of feet below the surface
  • The rocks, soil, and debris above the coal seam are pushed into valleys, and contaminating streams
  • Rock previously deep underground naturally contain toxic metals that then seep into streams, kill aquatic life,a and contaminate drinking water sources

"Black Lung"

  • Workers get it from breathing coal dust
  • Results in shortness of breath, puts individuals at risk for emphysema, bronchitis, and fibrosis
  • NIOSH reported that in 2005-2006, 9% of miners with 25 years experience or more tested positive
  • Incurable, increasing in severity, and is now hitting younger miners

Threats to the community:

2008 study by the WVU Institute for Health Policy Research shows that people living in coal mining communities

  • Have a 70% increased risk for developing kidney disease
  • Have a 64% increased risk for developing COPD
  • Are 30% more likely to report high blood pressure

It is mined in 26 stats, burned in all but two, and its ash is disposed of in more than 600 dumps in at least 47 states

  • The Delaware Division of Public Health confirmed a cancer cluster in the 6 zip code area surrounding NGR Energy Inc.'s Indian River Plant.
  • The study showed a cancer rate of 17% higher than the national average.

Facts about coal in the United States

Near Longview Texas, the Martin Lake coal plant is responsible fro 13% of all industrial air pollution in the state, contributing to Dallas-Forth Worth's high ozone levels and non-attainment status.

Health Effects of Coal Plants

There are 600 existing coal plants in the United States and thousands more around the world

The Clean Air Task Force's updated report estimates that particulate pollution from existing coal plants would cause 13, 200 deaths in 2010.

Clean coal is not so clean

Coal accounts for approximately half of all U.S. power generation

Environmental Racism

  • African Americans are 79% more likely than whites to live in neighborhoods where industrial pollution is suspected of causing the greatest health dangers
  • Poverty-stricken Native Americans face some of the worst toxic pollution problems in the country
  • Clean coal requires more coal.
  • High expenses make it unfeasible
  • Unproven technology
  • Coal mining is very harmful
