  • Besides praying to God and the Deities, there is a common theme of sacrifice in African religions
  • Religion has always been central to people's lives in Africa. The majority of Africans are now Muslim or Christian

  • Africa is known to be the second largest continent and measures 5,200 miles from north to south

  • The large ancient hills dominate a great part of African continent

  • Africa also has few great mountain ranges, such as the Atlas Mountains across the northern edge of the continent.

  • The highest point of Africa is Mount Uhuru.

  • The lowest point in Africa is 155m (509ft) below sea level at Lake Assal in Djibouti.

  • There are seven large rivers.

  • Southern Africa consists of: South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Malawi
  • Northern Part of Africa consists of: Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Algeria and Sudan.
  • The Main Country being South Africa since it's the biggest amongst all the Southern Countries.
  • It's also the African country with the largest number of whites in their population
  • 3 Main Countries: Egypt, Libya and Morocco.

THE SAHARA DESERT

SAHARA DESERT

The area of the Sahara Desert changed drastically over the past 5,000 years. From grasslands to dry sand, The Sahara Desert is now known as the largest hot desert in the world! Scientists believe that the desert was formed due to the climate changing. In the last thousand years, the atmosphere became dry and dusty.

  • During the 19th and 20th century, Europe started colonizing countries in Africa.
  • Egypt and Ghana were colonized by Britain, Eritrea and Libya by Italy, Morocco and Madagascar by France, etc.,
  • Almost all the African countries got colonized except Liberia and Ethiopia.
  • There are dietary restrictions in virtually every religion
  • Under the islamic law, Muslims are permitted to enjoy seafood
  • Christianity did not develop dietary rules and restrictions

EASTERN AND WESTERN AFRICA

  • Eastern Africa consists of: Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Kenya and Madagascar, etc.
  • Western Africa consists of: Liberia, Ghana, Nigeria, Guinea, Sierra Leone, etc.
  • Eastern Africa is where the first human-like bones were discovered.
  • The Main Western Country is: Liberia

DISCOVERY OF HUMANS:

TRADITIONAL DISHES

  • Pre-human bones date back to 4 or 5 million years ago.
  • The earliest human was named Lucy and was discovered by Donald Johanson, her bones are 3.4 million years old!
  • Actual human bones date back to 190,000 years ago in the Eastern part of Africa known as Ethiopia.

Food in the north :

  • The food has been heavily influenced by the ingredients brought by traders, invaders and migrants.
  • Wheat and its by-product, semolina, were introduced early on.

Food in west:

  • The cuisine rely on heavy starchy foods (carbohydrates), which provide energy.
  • fish is an important source of protein

Food in south and east:

  • Rely mainly on grains, beans and vegetables, with fish providing protein in coastal, lake or river regions.
  • Arabic influences are seen in East African cuisine.
  • while other fruits such as mangoes, papayas and pineapples are eaten for dessert.

Food in central africa:

  • Cassavas continue to form the basis of many meals. Starchy staples are often served with meat, bean or vegetable stews.

*To drink- Palm wine and locally brewed beers (made from a variety of native plants or crops) are popular beverages
