Tempters
Tempters may appear to pull the hero off track. They often use the hero's own doubts and fears along with other distractions to pull the hero from his/her path. Tempters may be disguised as helpers.
Harry faces many challenges through out his first year at Hogwarts, but many of them are mini-challenges, pieces of his main challenge.
"A troll! In the dungeons!"
This challenge once again attacks Harry's main weakness, his inexperience with magic. It is only through teamwork that the troll is defeated and Hermione is saved. This challenge allows Harry to forge a greater bond with both Ron and Hermione. Harry's two friends help compensate for some of his weaknesses.
Harry's main challenge is keeping the Sorceror's Stone out of Voldemort's hands. Harry and his friends have to overcome a series of mini-challenge in order to reach the Stone before they can even begin to worry about protecting it. They are Fluffy (the three-headed dog), Devil's Snare (a nasty strangling plant), a room full of flying keys (Only one of which fits the door), and a very violent game of chess. Each mini-challenge plays to one of the Hero's strengths.
Into the Abyss
The faces the greatest challenge of his/her journey. He or She 'surrenders to the adventure.' The Abyss typically requires the hero to face their greatest fear alone. There is a chance the hero may fail due to a flaw in their character and is forced to retreat. If the hero does not make another attempt he or she becomes bitter and is never able to become what he or she could have been had they faced the Abyss again.
After Ron sacrifices himself to win the game of wizard's chess Harry tell Hermione to take Ron back to the infirmary and send a letter to Dumbledore. He tells her that he has to be the one who goes on. "Ron's right. It Has to be me." Harry has accepted that this is his quest. He goes on to face Voldemort, the man who murdered his family and tried to kill him, alone.
Note:
The next steps- Transformation, Revelation, and Atonement- can come in different orders.
The Atonement
The hero is 'at one with his/her new self.' Whatever imbalance started the hero on his/her journey is fixed... at least until the next Call.
The Atonement takes place at the goodbye feast. Harry is welcomed as a hero. He is happy. Found his place in the world. Harry's found a home and family at Hogwarts. He's not lonely anymore.
The Return to the Known World
"What happened down in the dungeon between you and Professor Quirrell is a complete secret. So, naturally, the whole school knows. " -Dumbledore
There are two returns in this movie. The first is at the End of Term Feast after the events in the Dungeons. Not only did Harry stop Voldemort, but they also won the House Cup for the Gryffindors and are welcomed back as heroes.
The Hero's Journey
Of Harry Potter
The Call to Adventure
The Return
The hero is invited on an adventure. He/she is given a chance to venture into the unknown in order to gain something- money, a way to save the kingdom, a new family, or maybe a magical education... The hero might not always go willingly. The call can come as a fast drastic change, known as a transformative crisis, or it may be a gradual process, like the realization that life is lacking something.
The hero returns to his/her regular life. Once home he/she fully discovers what was gained on the journey. The hero tries to contribute to the society, usually by sharing what he/she has gained. The Return doesn't always go as planned. The hero may be reject by his/her people. The society may not accept the hero's gift. The hero may begin to lose his/her knew understandings and slip back into his/her old way of life. That in turn can be one of the many possible reasons for the next Call to Adventure.
Refusal of the Call
The hero may turn down the call to adventure at first for many reasons like fear, duty, or maybe the hero feels unworthy.
"You're a wizard, Harry."
Harry's call comes when Hagrid arrives and Harry finally get to read his letter. He learns that he is a wizard and that he has been invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry is offered a chance to escape the Dursleys and get a magical education. At first Harry refuses the Call out of disbelief. He tells Hagrid,
"I... I can't be a wizard. I mean, I'm just Harry."
The second return is Harry's return to the Dursley's. It is only as he's leaving Hogwarts does Harry truly realize all that he's gained- a family, a home, friends, confidence, and more than a little bit of magical knowledge. Needless to say the Dursley's aren't real thrilled about his return, but Harry is confident he'll be able to survive the summer. After all he's got something to look forward to and the Dursley's don't know he's not allowed to do magic.
This is where the adventure really starts. The hero leaves behind their known world and enters into the unknown. There may be a threshold guardian. It is here that the Hero often meets their guide and/or a helper.
Harry crosses the Threshold when he goes to Diagon Alley with Hagrid to purchase school supplies. Harry leaves behind the muggle world and enters the magical one for the first time. Here he encounters a kind of Threshold Guardian...
Threshold Guardian
The wands at Ollivander's Wand shop. Harry is unable to continue on his journey until he gets a wand. At Ollivander's he tries several wands, but none of them choose him, until Ollivander has Harry try a very specific wand. The wand that chooses Harry is twin of the wand that Voldemort used to murder Harry's parents. This wand will become one of Harry's greatest tools.
A being or situation that blocks the hero's way until the hero is prepared for the coming journey. The Threshold guardian may become the hero's guide on his or her quest.
Once Harry has his wand he is able to start on his adventure in earnest. Now It's off for Hogwarts.
The Challenges
This is where the journey into the unknown starts in earnest. The Hero starts facing actual dangers and a degree of risk enters the adventure. The Hero faces challenges that are often aimed at his/her weaknesses. The Challenges often start out fairly easy, but grow in difficulty.
Transformation and Revelation
Platform 9 and 3/4
Harry's first challenge takes place before he even arrives at Hogwarts. This challenge is aimed at Harry's lack of experience with and knowledge of magic. Harry has to ask for help to overcome this challenge. It is here that he meets Ron, a helper.
The hero's transformation is completed as he or she defeats the Abyss and conquers his/her fears. A part of the hero dies and is replaced- for example fear dies and courage is born. As a part of the Transformation, the hero has a revelation- a sudden, dramatic change in thoughts or point of view. The revelation makes the hero into someone totally different from the person who began the journey. At this point in the journey, the hero realizes that he/she is finally the person he/she wanted to be.
The Sorting- Slytherin vs. Gryffindor
Shortly after Harry's arrival at Hogwarts he, and the other first years, have to be sorted into their houses. It is shortly before the sorting that Harry faces a tempter, Draco Malfoy, descised as a helper. Malfoy tries to play on Harry's ignorance of the wizarding world and tries to convince him to try for Slytherin House on top of insulting Ron saying. "Red hair... and a hand-me-down robe. You must be a Weasley." Harry turns Malfoy down and later begs the Sorting Hat to put him anywhere, but Slytherin.
Quidditch
Being 'the youngest seeker in a century' itsn't easy. This challenge targets his lack of magical knowledge and his insecurities. Harry fears letting his team down so he works hard learning to play Quidditch. He ends up winning the game for the Gryffindors and the broom flying skills he picks up along the way will come in handy when Harry has to face later challenges.
Ron's experience with wizard's chess gets them through the nearly deadly game. "Ron, you don't suppose this is going to be like... *real* wizard's chess, do you?" -Hermione
Harry's skill on a broomstick
allows him to catch the key.
Hermione's knowledge gets them safety past the Devil's Snare: "Stop moving, both of you. This is devil's snare! You have to relax."
Harry's Transformation and Revelation happen as he's fighting Voldemort and afterwords when he talks to Dumbledore in the infirmary. Harry isn't as afraid of Voldemort anymore. He knows he can be beaten. Harry realizes that He survived simply because he was loved. The realization that he is loved changes Harry. It gets rid of a lot of his insecurities. He started his journey at the Dursley's house where he was neither loved or wanted.
