Australia's Religious Landscape - Immigration

Immigration to Australia (1991 - 2011)

Since Australia's confederation under the British Commonwealth, Australia's primary religion has been Christianity and it's many denominations.

With the introduction of these key global religions however, it's dominance as the primary religion is constantly challenged by the increasing levels of the global religions.

The popularity in Buddhism skyrocketed with the massive influx of Asian migrates after the Vietnam War.

- In 2001, Islam stood at only 1% of Australia sharing its faith. According to the 2011 census, this figure has rose to a significant 2.2% increase with 194,172 more people following the belief since 2001.

- The Gulf War harmed many Iraq people, causing many to migrate to Australia for safety. With them they brought their Islamic traditions, values and beliefs and, during the Iraq war in 2003 – 2011, the religion spread wildly throughout Australia with the influx of new Iraq migrates fleeing the Iraq War and their war torn homes.

2001 - 2011 Census

There were many significant increases and reductions in the religious aspect of the census's between 2001 and 2011. The most recognised increase was the rise in the 'No Religion' level with 4,796,786 choosing this. (A 41% increase!)

This increase was closely followed by the increase in Hinduism as a prominent religion in Australia's religious landscape. Hinduism experienced a 147% increase in the ten years, with 180,062 people choosing it.

The end

Buddhism

Buddhism today has established itself as one of the fastest growing religions in Australia with 528,977 devotees as according to the 2011 Census following the religion, 2.47% of Australia’s population follows the Buddhist rule.

Thanks for listening

This significant increase was due to the migration from India during 2001 - 2011, with a 209% increase in Indian born Australian residents. (The largest migrate increase up to 2011!)

In 1938, the first specific Buddhism group was established in Melbourne. This was followed by the Buddhist Society of Victoria in 1953, and the Buddhist Society in New South Wales in 1956.

Immigration in Australia

Islam

Over the many decades, Immigration has made a significant contribution to the changing religious landscape of Australia’s cultural and religious diversity.

Immigration has brought over a massive increase in key global religions like Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Muslim and Islam.

Immigration levels significantly rose during 1939-45 due to the Second World War. Many fled to Australia for safety against the persecution they were facing.

Along with their valuables and families, the migrants brought over their own religious traditions and values which deeply impacted Australia's religious landscape at the time.
