Eventually Temujin was pitted against his former ally and childhood friend Jamukha. After defeating Jamukha, Temujin became the most powerful leader in the Mongolian steppe and was proclaimed Genghis Khan.
Eventually power began to shift to the Mongol bureaucrats coupled with feuds among different khanates contributed to the Mongol decline. After Ogodei's death, the empire was divided up into rival states. Essentially, the empire grew too large to be maintained.
Temujin's difficulties would persist into his young adult years. When Temujin was only 19 his tribe was raided. Temujin managed to escape but his wife was kidnapped. In order to rescue her Temujin rallied ally tribes and led the attack that ultimately saved her. This victory earned Temujin the respect of many of his peers, foreshadowing his inevitable rise to power.

Born in 1162 to the chieftan of a Qiat sub-clan, Temujin is the original name of the man that would come to be known as Ghengis Khan. Temujin lived a difficult life growing up. After his father was killed, his father's followers abandoned Temujin and his family to die. However, Temujin's family was able to survive.
Prior to becoming a vast empire, the Mongolian steppe was inhabited by nomadic, pastoral people.
