Early explorers saw the bison and thought they looked like the water buffalo from the old world

The way of life for the First Nations people changed as more and more people came to the prairies, and larger numbers of buffalo were killed. There were millions of buffalo roaming the prairies before 1800, but by 1880 the huge herds of bison had disappeared.

In the Cree language, buffalo is pronounced paskwâwimostos

The buffalo were very important animals to First Nations people, and EVERY part of the buffalo was used!
