The Life Cycle of a Butterfly
The Butterfly
- Through the egg, caterpillar, and chrysalis phases we know have a beautiful butterfly!
- The butterfly is capable of mating and reproducing eggs.
- The butterfly is also capable of colonizing new habitats.
The Chrysalis
- This is the stage that most of us know as the cocoon stage.
- This is when the caterpillar's tissue is broken down in order for the adult insect to form.
- The chrysalis often blends into the background due to its normally green or brown color.
The Caterpillar
- A caterpillar is also often called a larva.
- This is the stage where the egg hatchs and a caterpillar is born.
- It is the long and worm-like stage of a butterfly.
- In order to enclose its rapidly growing body, it has to shed its skin four or more times.
The Egg
Caterpillar pt.2
- An egg is tiny and round and often has microscopic structers such as fine ribs.
- The egg is attached by the mother onto or near objects that are intended for the caterpillar to eat. These objects include stems and leaves.
- Caterpillars often have intersting patterns.
- They can have stripes or patches.
- Caterpillars also can have spine-like hairs.
