The Life Cycle of a Butterfly

The Butterfly

  • Through the egg, caterpillar, and chrysalis phases we know have a beautiful butterfly!
  • The butterfly is capable of mating and reproducing eggs.
  • The butterfly is also capable of colonizing new habitats.

The Chrysalis

  • This is the stage that most of us know as the cocoon stage.
  • This is when the caterpillar's tissue is broken down in order for the adult insect to form.
  • The chrysalis often blends into the background due to its normally green or brown color.

The Caterpillar

  • A caterpillar is also often called a larva.
  • This is the stage where the egg hatchs and a caterpillar is born.
  • It is the long and worm-like stage of a butterfly.
  • In order to enclose its rapidly growing body, it has to shed its skin four or more times.

The Egg

Caterpillar pt.2

  • An egg is tiny and round and often has microscopic structers such as fine ribs.
  • The egg is attached by the mother onto or near objects that are intended for the caterpillar to eat. These objects include stems and leaves.
  • Caterpillars often have intersting patterns.
  • They can have stripes or patches.
  • Caterpillars also can have spine-like hairs.
