Smell is a very powerful tool for creating a scene and describing how the characters feel about that scene.
For example:
My mother’s kitchen always smelt of the warm bread she baked every day.
The smell of rotting fish filling the air made Beth gag.
Taste works well with smell in stories
For example:
The coffee was smooth and strong with a hint of sweet caramel.
The flavour of lemon burst into her mouth, making her pucker her lips.
The liquid tasted soapy and burnt the back of his throat.
Sight
What can you see? How would you describe it?
Sound
What can you hear? What words could you use to describe the sound?
Smell
What fragrances are in the air?
Touch
What texture can you feel? What kind of temperature is it?
Taste
Can you almost taste any of the aromas?
This is the most common sense that writers draw upon. It is the most powerful when we use simile and metaphor to create a sight image in the reader’s mind
Example:
Her skin was grey like clouds on a winter morning.
The fruits on the table looked like a sparkling cluster of jewels.
Sound creates atmosphere as well as painting a picture of the scene.
For example:
The only sound that Katie could hear was her own rasping breath.
Crashing waves, thundered across the rocks.
Simile: a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid. For example ‘Lola is as brave as a lion.’
Metaphor: a figure of speech that describes something by equating it with something else. It is a comparison between two different things that have an important characteristic in common. For example, "Freddie is a pig when he eats," both Freddie and a pig are sloppy eaters.
The five senses are:
- Sight
-Touch
-Smell
-Taste
-Sound
Introduce touch by describing textures and surfaces.
For example:
The pillow was textured like a soft marshmallow.
The gravel was rough under her cheek; hard lumps that grazed and bruised.
The dress was so soft that it slid through her fingers like liquid silk
- The girl was friendly
- The man was happy
- The weather was cold
- The teacher was angry
- The classroom was interesting
- The mermaid was loud
