THE KNIGHTS OF LABOR
- The KOL began as a secret society of tailors in Philadelphia (1869)
- Open to all workers no matter race/gender/skill
- Advocated 8 work hours equal pay for (men/women), and aabolishing child labor
AMERICAN FEDERATION OF LABOR
- Formed by Samuel Gompers in 1886
- Craft Union for the skilled workers
- Gained strength in bargaining
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Workers worked in dangerous conditions
- No sick pay/ compensations of injuries
- 1882-average of 675 were killed a week at work
- Sweat shops where many children and women worked
- Child labor becomes an issue
