Lifestyle

The patient, a 50-year old woman made an appointment with a family doctor because she couldn't work full time at her job. Her main complaints were "hurting all over" and extreme fatigue. The doctor examined her and ordered a blood test for RA. When she came back negative, he suggested a new diet and some stress management techniques. Pie pain, swelling and fatigue remained but with visits to 5 other physicians over 3 years, she got essentially the same response as with the first one. Because more symptoms occur, she made an appointment with a new doctor and told him of "hurting all over", a clammy feeling in her lower legs, peroids of being suddenly too hot or cold, pain in the epigastric area, diffciculty sleeping, fatigue and depression. Her temperature and BP are normal but when the RA test came back negative. The diagnosis was fibromyalgia. The doctor prescribed medication to the help of patient sleep at night, dietary restriction to caffeine and alcohol and regular exercise. Within a few days, the treatment brought the symptoms under control and the woman was able to work full time again.
