Orphans in the Early 20th Century
Consequences of being an orphan
Consequences of being an orphan in the early 20th century resulted in the possibility of hard, unpaid labor, malnutrition and hunger. Being in an orphanage however, did result in the children being taught the trades that their parents were incapable of teaching them. Unfortunately, being in an orphanage resulted in suffering a higher death rate than most other children

The Orphan Train
The Orphan Train was a train that would go around and collect all the children that were orphaned or left to fend for themselves. They were sent out to rural places to do physically demanding farm work in exchange for a place to sleep. Most of the children didnt know what was happening when they boarded the train and therefore were not prepared for what was basically indentured slavery, because they received no pay.
The Orphans
During the great depression many children became orphans as a result of their parents death, illness or they just might not be wealthy enough to support their children. If children came in with siblings, they would often be separated
How It Relates To Hugo
It is possible that the reason Hugo didn't want to go to the orphanage was because he knew that the conditions would be terrible and at least at the station he would have his own bed and space. Also he wanted to keep the Automata because he knew that he was destined to fix it. Hugo knew that he couldn't pursue his dreams if he was sent to an orphanage.
The Conditions of the Orphanages
The biggest problem faced by orphans in day to day life in the orphanage were the horrible conditions that they were living in. Because of the rising amount of young people without parents, orphanages were often very overcrowded and the children's only option would either be having to share beds or sleep on the floor. On a good day, the meals for the children usually consisted of soup and bread but if they were running short, they would have oatmeal for weeks on end. If there was nothing left, their only other alternative would be to starve or scavenge for food.
