As a special education teacher, I want to know that the students that I have developed IEPs for are thriving, learning, and growing to reach their fullest potential. It is essential that each of their educational plans are specific and unique to their needs and that they are accomplishing their intent. In other words, I need to make sure that the plans provide appropriate accommodations to optimize learning for each student. At the same time, goals need to address the significant academic or social concerns that the student has. Progress needs to be monitored and recorded, and the plans should be adjusted if inadequate progress is taking place. All this is for the benefit of student acheivement and growth!!
The United State constitution guarantees that no individual can be denied the same rights as others who are in his or her similar stage of life. In education, this means that every student, no matter the severity of their disability, must be treated like every other student and receive an education that will be beneficial for them.
1. FREE: The education of every student with disabilities will not be an expense to the family, but rather the responsibility of the school where he or she attends.
2. APPROPRIATE: Every identified student will receive an individualize educational plan that is unique and meets the needs of the student for which it is developed.
3. PUBLIC: All public schools are required to educate students with disbilities, no matter how severe the disability may be.
4. ZERO REJECT: No child can be denied an education because they are viewed as unable to be educated.
