Annie' s Journey

A Graph Comparing Years of Immigration to Number of Immigrants

Population Density of Irish Immigrants to the U.S.

  • Annie came over to the U.S. with her two brothers Anthony (11) and Phillip (7)
  • The conditions were harsh, especially since Moore was a steerage passenger. The room they were in for 12 long days (December 21, 1891 - January 1, 1892) was dark and airless, with people constantly getting seasick
  • Annie Moore is best known for being the first immigrant to step foot on the newly opened Ellis Island

Reasons for Immigration

  • Moore, her brother, and her parents immigrated to the U.S. from Ireland because of religious prosecution. Moore was a Catholic, a practice that was not encouraged in Ireland
  • Moore's parents saw job opportunities in the U.S. and immigrated there
  • Moore came later, along with her two brothers and immediately settled in with her family
  • Moore became famous for being the first immigrant to set foot on newly opened Ellis Island
