The world behind the text

Jesus told the story of the unforgiving servant to his disciples because they asked him, "how many times shall I forgive my brother?" Jesus replies saying "not 7 times but 77 times."

A king who discovered one of his servants owed him money, the equivalent of several million dollars today. The king demanded the servant and his family were sold. The servant then fell on his knees and begged the king for forgiveness. The forgiving king released him of his debt. That same servant then went out and found another fellow servant owed him the equivalent to 16 cents, he demanded the money and choked him. His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged that he forgive him, but the first servant had his fellow thrown in jail. Once the king found of the servants doings, the first servant was also thrown in jail.

Servants or slaves is referred to someone who was owned or controlled by someone else. Many slaves were born into slavery because of their parents. Others were captured in war and forced into slavery. Some also sold themselves.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this parable teaches us that "the one forgiven much should forgive much."
