The narrative will usually be centered around a detective trying to solve a crime, often a murder. There will be an investigation taking place which involves clues and the killer's identity will often be revealed at the end of the episode or series. There will often be chase scenes and also interrogation scenes present. There will usually be a teaser or 'hook' sequence at the start which shows the crime being committed or maybe the body the body being discovered. its purpose is to draw the viewer into the narrative. The theme of justice and good vs evil will be clearly presented in the narrative.
The setting of a crime drama are often often city settings but some rural settings. Police stations, interview rooms, police cells, dark empty streets, crime scenes. Some scenes are also shot in victims houses and workplaces.
Technical codes are all the ways in which equipment is used to tell the story in a media text, for example the camera work in a film, lighting and sound effects throughout the film. They use this to produce suspension and maybe show an action scene.
Symbolic codes show what is beneath the surface of what we see. For example, a character's actions show you how the character is feeling.
Some codes fit both categories – music for example, is both technical and symbolic. Such as a ragged coat could mean hunry/pour.
The style is normally naturalistic and realistic - uses realistic props and noises, music is used to add effect to dramatic scenes, often quite dark and eery. music is osten used during dark moments, fast paced action scenes and is used to build suspense.
The characters in a crime drama will include, police detectives, private detectives and crime teams, for example in C.S.I. Often duos of crime solvers - a main detective and a sidekick (normally a woman), such as Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and Ellie Miller (Olivia Coleman) in Broadchurch. Main detective tends to be clever but cold, sidekick is the "brawn" and is more relatable. Women often play scientific roles and the victims. However Brenda Blethyn who plays Vera in Vera is the main detective so this subverts the typical role that women shouls play in crime dramas, this draws more people the watch the program.

Typical codes and conventions of a crime/drama film would be:
- A chase (usually car).
- A lot of involvement with props that can be harmful such as knifes or guns.
- The villain (protagonist) would usually have some unidentified problems that will be revealed at the very end of the film.
