Blink 182- Whats my age again
Does it conform to stereotypes
It conforms to many stereotypes;
The stereotype that all Young adult males dont care about their actions and who they offend.
Also that Young adult males are influenced by the actions of their friendship group and also that their actions are influenced by sexual attraction toward the opposite sex.
Anyone offended/Why
- Parents and older adults- Due to the focus of the video showing the band running naked throughout. (the band should be seen as role models to younger people). Also because the scantily clad "nurse" was played by adult movie star Janine Lindemulder and the video was played everywhere to all ages of people.
Mise en scene and camera work
- Costume- Naked, punk hair- metaphorical for the attitude of the gender and also the attitude of the punk rock genre
- Tattoos & Piercings- show middle class and the wealth due to the amount of money that Tattoos and piercings cost, therefore showing they have enough money to have these.
- Props and location- The town location is enhanced by the amount of cars and other everyday items used as props to show the professions of the inhabitants (lawnmower- Gardener, Magnifying glass- Child, Hazard signs- Workman).
- Band Props- Instruments- key convention of a rock video.
- Long shots- used constantly to show the band running through the streets naked.
- Close ups- Instruments and the band to promote them (key convention). Also the reactions of the workers and the basketball shot.
- Mid shots- showing the band alongside the "nurse" in the street.
- Tracking- used throughout to keep up with the band running in the streets.
How are these represented
Representation of a music video
- The Young adult male is represented through the use of mise en scene especially costume and also the bands actions toward those in the town. An example is when they shove the waiter spilling all the drinks showing that as a gender they are out to have fun and worry about their actions later on. Middle class is also shown through mise en scene and the actions of the band as their class and status makes them feel confident enough to carry out the actions with little awareness of those affected.
- The age and class of the people in the streets is represented by their actions and attitudes. They are all of working class and are working at the times they are seen. Their costume shows this as they are all in clothing associated with their profession (the waiter in a shirt and trousers and a towel draped over his arm). Props are alos evident showing their professions (drinks tray- waiter) (hosepipe for the gardener).
- The attitude of the gender towards the opposite sex is shown through the actions of the band. When running through the park they nudge the girl making out so they can show her their attractiveness to make her boyfriend annoyed. Also when the "nurse" walks past the band, they double back and walk alongside her and are seen to be staring at her chest. This showing the sexual attraction she has toward the band and the young adult male.
- The towns is shown to be a peaceful close community. This is shown through the close groupings of residents and community friendship shown by the bundles of people in locations such as shops or the restaurant. The close community is also shown by the reactions of people as the band run through. The reactions give a feeling that the town are used to the bands antics and it is a regular occurrence.
