Historical Developments
- A historical development in determinism was the connection it had to Newtonian physics in the 17th century. In transition, in the 20th century, determinism has arguably been approximation to the reality of quantum mechanics.
- A historical development in materialism was Karl Max's approach to, "the materialistic conception of history". Karl then came to a general conclusion of men and the social production of their existence.
- Historical development in rationalism started with Rene Descartes; one of the best known proponents of rationalism. He believed that knowledge of eternal truths could be attained by reason alone, without the need for any sensory experience.
Determinism throughout Epistemology and Metaphysics
Materialism throughout Epistemology and Metaphysics
First to begin with, determinism is the view that every event ,including human actions, is brought about by previous events in accordance with universal casual laws that govern the world(Chaffee, 2013).
- Determinism in epistemology is based upon ones psychological state of mind and choice; their free will.
- Determinism in metaphysics is based upon complexity and it's contributions to the inaccurate belief that free choice is impossible while moving through life.
- The comparison of the two is that human freedom is an illusion.
Materialism is just the physical things.
- Materialism in epistemology
- Materialism in metaphysics is reason itself is structured with forms of experience and categories that give a phenomenal and logical structure to any possible object of empirical experience.
Rationalism throughout Epistemology and Metaphysics
Rationalism is the view that reason s the primary source of all knowledge and that only our reasoning abilities can enable us to understand sense experience and reach accurate conclusions( Chaffee, 2013).
- Rationalism is the epistemological theory that significant knowledge of the world can best be achieved by a priori means.
- Rationalism in metaphysics was that we could have knowledge of things as they are in themselves, independent of the conditions of our experience of them.
- Both theories were based upon knowledge being the source for enabling.
Introduction
Epistemology and metaphysics are two philosophies that are very much important like any other philosophy in the psychological world. Epistemology is the study of the nature of knowledge and justification. Metaphysics on the other hand, is the study of the ultimate characteristics of reality or existence. One must keep in mind that when dealing with philosophies, there are important theories that helps shape them through their various similarities and contrasts. With that being said, throughout this presentation my main focus is to help the audience understand how epistemology and metaphysics compare and contrast through the theories of determinism, materialism, and rationalism. Let the battle begin !
