5 Stages of Drug Dependency

Physical

Stage 1

  • There is curiosity about drug use
  • There maybe questions asked or the desire to join those using drugs.
  • There is a willingness to listen to stories about the effects of drugs.
  • A person in Stage 1 will watch others obtaining drugs or using them.
  • Severe changes in body image
  • Increase in strength from the drug
  • self-mutilation of various types
  • Inflicting remarkable property damage
  • Pulling one's own teeth
  • Numbness of the extremities
  • Slurred speech
  • Loss of coordination
  • A sense of strength and invulnerability
  • A blank stare
  • Rapid and involuntary eye movements

Mental

Stage 2

Stage 3

Social

  • There is experimentation with drugs and discovery of the effects.
  • This is usually social, recreational use, carried out as part of a group, usually on weekends.
  • The peer pressure of the group use is enough reason for many people to continue to use drugs.

Stage 4

  • Discovered the “benefits” of using drugs.
  • There is an alleviation of boredom or anxiety.
  • Problems and stresses may seem to disappear.
  • Girls or women may use stimulants for weight loss and males may use steroids for appearance enhancement.
  • When positive effects outweigh the risks or any negative effects, individuals may become regular users.
  • Acquire a supply of drugs and drug paraphernalia.
  • Get regular contacts they can rely on for more supplies.
  • There may be drug use more frequently, no longer restricting the use to weekends.
  • Behavior and activities begin to change.
  • School, work or family affairs may seem less important.
  • There may be changes with friends to associate with others who use drugs.
  • Legal complications may appear.

Interview

Physical

  • Loss of employment
  • Drinking at inappropriate times
  • Reduced judgment
  • Child abuse, domestic violence, rape, burglary and assault
  • Criminal charges for drunk driving or public disorder, or civil penalties
  • There becomes a preoccupation with drug use.
  • Behavior changes become more obvious.
  • The user may be found to lie frequently and may begin stealing or dealing drugs to support their drug use.
  • As drug tolerance increases, the user may start using stronger drugs to get the same effect.
  • More neglect of school, work or family affairs.
  • The user will become secretive, harder to reach and is more likely to neglect former interests completely.
  • Legal and financial complications often worsen.

What ages do you see drug abusers come in for rehabilitation?

Social

Around mid twenties for drug related addicts

Stage 5

What is an average recovery time?

  • Violence is greatly exaggerated towards others

  • Detached
  • Distant
  • Estranged
  • Cirrhosis of the liver
  • Pancreatitis
  • Epilepsy
  • Polyneuropathy
  • Alcoholic dementia
  • Heart disease
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Peptic ulcers
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease, alcoholic liver disease, and cancer.
  • General damage to the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
  • Fatality
  • The user is dependent on their drug of choice.
  • He or she can’t face daily life without drugs and uses them just to function or feel “normal.”
  • They deny the problem and present a completely false face to their family and environment.
  • Physical problems worsen.
  • Financial and legal complications are often severe.
  • They may sever ties with family and former friends.
  • They are now addicted.

Every person is different and each person has to take their own time to complete the program. Motivation is key though. If someone wants to get better then they will progress quicker.
