What does this do to people?

What happened?

It causes severe and lasting deterioration of mental functioning.

How did the message change?

What happened that caused the message to change?

People who go through it are "never the same again.”

Why do we need communication skills?

How do you know when effective communication has taken place?

We are social beings -- we spend much of our lives interacting with other people.

What could you have done differently?

There are two kinds of communication:

To students will post their drawings.

Student leader will again describe the drawing of the geometric figures to the class

Each table student can ask one clarifying question.

All drawings, we posted along with the original for review.

  • Verbal (using language or symbols, like writing)

Therefore, it is important to learn how to get along with others and function in social settings.

  • Non-verbal, AKA body language

Frequently we are communicating a message that is somewhat different from the one we intend to send.

Sometimes our unconscious feelings are manifested in the form of our nonverbal behavior

It is important that we be conscious of the messages we are sending.

We'll talk about non-verbal first.

Communication skills help us have more effective interpersonal relationships.

Question of the Day:

So what does this tell us?

What would it be like to stay in your room by yourself, never go out, and never talk or write to anybody else?

We were made to communicate with each other.

Connecting with others is “hardwired” into our brains.

Activity!

Get your glad rags on, we're going out on the town!

5 of you must convey an emotion by saying the word “Hi.”

What message was being sent?

Now I'm good and vexed! Yinz young’uns quit your piecing!

But verbal – spoken or written – communication can be problems too.

To the people who know the words or understand the pronunciation, there's no problem, right?

But for anybody else, it's a different matter.

3 of you must use nonverbal behavior to communicate the emotion on the card.

What emotion is being expressed?

Conveying a thought or feeling from one person to another so that it is understood correctly.

Stanley's such a peach! Why, he took them in a drawing room on the Pullman.

A few definitions for now

What then is communication?

  • Interpersonal: from one person to another.
  • Message: an act of communication.

Respond: to answer

  • Effective: having the intended result

Exercise in verbal communication!!!

Student leader will describe a geometric shape to the class.

They will study the arrangement carefully in order to prepare to construct the rest of the class verbally on how to draw the figures.

Class, you are listening carefully to the instructions and draw what is described as accurately as possible without asking any questions.

Nonverbal communication (con't.)

What was the sentence?

What percentage of our everyday communication is nonverbal?

Let's see what you understand. Read and listen carefully!

There's a name for this:

“The football game is Saturday, the quiz is Thursday, and the final is Tuesday.”

Our communication with others is 65% to 80% nonverbal.

Ready to give it a try?

Avoiding Misunderstandings

SOLITARY CONFINEMENT!!!

Outweighs verbal communication -- that means we generally believe body language more than words.

You have 4 minutes to complete the looking at misunderstandings work sheet.

I need 3 volunteers!

3 students shall share examples. Class will give feedback

Activity!

I need 2 volunteers!

2 students shall rehearse their misunderstandings.

Class will give feedback.

Now we're going play “TELEPHONE” Here's how it works:

First, I'll tell the first person a simple sentence.

Then that person will whisper the message to the next person and so on until everyone has heard the message.

You will get only one chance to whisper the message, so you need to try to communicate the message clearly. If you realize you've made a mistake, you can't go back.

You will have one (1) minute to complete this game.

Nonverbal communication

Because of this, we believe body language more than words.

Body language, such as facial expressions, body positions, body and hand gestures, mannerisms, etc.

Which message do you believe???

Points to make

What are some VERBAL ways to communicate?

For effective communication, we need to --

Effective communication exists between two people when the receiver interpret the message in the same way the sender intended it.

What are some ways to ensure your message is communicated in the same way you intended it?

  • Speech

Especially with facial expressions, it is much the same across cultures.

Consider the following:

1) Send our messages clearly;

  • Writing (pen and paper)

Gestures may vary from culture to culture.

We have to make sure we transmit the same message on both channels, verbal and non-verbal.

2) Receive messages from others clearly.

  • Media, electronic and print
  • Signing

Activity!

Pearl has taken her machine to Mr. Strader for him to dope it.

5 of you must convey an emotion by saying the word “Hi.”

What message was being sent?

3 of you must use nonverbal behavior to communicate the emotion on the card.

What emotion is being expressed?

Considering the rig that fellow's got up in, why, it's only to be expected he'll have a queer moniker,

So how can we avoid miscommunication?

workshop

Hand gestures can vary, though. Examples:

5) Be specific

If there is something specific or important, repeat that information.

tower game:

I swan, Mary, I'd have reckoned you'd have a beau by now.

rules

1) Be attentive to body language

Send the same message on both verbal and nonverbal channels.

6) Write it down!

Our memories can play tricks on us: "Did she say it's on the right or the left?"

-first 2 min you can talk with your team

-next 3 min only body language

-next 4 min no talk no signs but can write with one pen and one paper

-next 3 min no talk no sign no write

-last 3 min the team can talk

2) Check the message

Ask questions: "Do you understand what I mean?" -- "By that you're saying. . . ."

Several years ago, researchers showed photos of faces showing 30 different emotions -- happiness, sadness, anger, confusion, disgust and so on -- to members of 30 different ethic groups. The result?

The members of each ethnic group recognized the emotions shown by all the other ethnic groups!

You get sick. The doctor looks at your test results, gets very serious, looks down, searches for words and finally says, “According to these, it looks like you're going to be fine.”

Communication Skills

Your teacher tells you you did a bad job on a project and she has to give you an F. While saying this she looks puzzled, as if what she is saying makes no sense to her -- or she says she's really sad to do this, but is smiling and looks happy.

So how can we avoid miscommunication?

3) Paraphrase

Sender: “Don’t be home too late.”

Receiver: “What I hear you saying is you want me home by nine o’clock.”

This leads us to our topic for today:

4) Repeat

If there is something specific or important, repeat that information.

Definitions

Writing down

Verbal: spoken

Nonverbal: body language and facial expressions

Misunderstanding: a failure to interpret a message correctly

Ambiguous: uncertain or obscure.

Controversy: in opposition to or at odds with

Paraphrase: restatement of a message to clarify its meaning

Being specific Sender- Instead of saying, “I’ll be late,” state specified time you expect to arrive.
