T is for Tragedy

A tragety is a form of Greek drama in which the main character struggles to overcome hardships but does not succeed.

In the end of a tragedy the main character fails and the audience is left with an unhappy or sad ending.

U is for Herodotus

S is for Socrates

The earliest greek dramas are trageties.

Socrates was a teacher that taught his beliefs.

Herodotus wrote the history of the persian war.

X is for Alexander

Alexander was known for his takeover of the Persian empire.

Students of Socrates' writings showed tat he was a harsh critic of the Sophists.

Alexander became king when he was 20 because his father was killed before he could take over Persia.

He wrote stories of gods taking part in historical events.

Trageties were always based on greek mythology.

At the age 16 Alexander was commander in the army because his father wanted him to be ready to take his position.

Socrates created the Socratic method in his search for the tuth.

Plato founded a school in athens called The Academy.

A cavalry i a group of soldiers on horseback.

The republic, one of Platos writings, presented his plan for an ideal society and government.

A ritual is an action that is part of a religious ceremony.

Cavalries were basiclly unstoppable because of the advantages of being on horseback.

Example of rituals are praying and sacrifice of animals.

The cavalries were mostly for taking out the ligher equipped soldiers.

Alexander the great led 40,000 cavaliers (plural of cavalry) into battle with the persians.

Preforming rituals were absolutely necessary in ancient greece and rome.

Platos writings are big blends of ethics, politcal philosophy, moral psychology, epistemology, and metaphisics.

In Republic Plato organized society into theree groups, Kings, warriors, and the rest of the people.

Each god had a specified animal to be sacrificed to them in order for it to be directed to that god.

Hera was constantly fighting Zeus because of his extramarital affairs.

Aesop wrote the fables "The Fox and the Grapes" and "The Boy Who Cried Wolf."

Zeus was the king of gods in

Greek beliefs.

Greeks believed that ther was a god for most aspects of life

(Hestia: goddes of the home).

Greek gods were not all-powerful beings they had great

powers but not many powers.

All Greek gods were related

in a way (i.e brother/sister, father, son, and daughter).

When Sparta invaded neighboring

city-states they took prisoners and called them helots.

Helots is a word that comes from the Greek word '"capture."

These Helots were in between the slaves and citizens.

Most helots were serfs, or agricultural laborer.

The Iliad taught courage and honor to those who read it.

The Iliad taught it was important to be loyal to your friends and to value the relationship between spouses.

It tells about The seige of Troy.

The heroes in the Iliad became childhood heroes to the younger boys.

Aesop told his fables during the golden age.

J is for Jury

A Jury is a group sworn to give a verdict in a legal case.

The jury found Socrates guilty and sentenced him to death.

Socrates could also leave athens and live, but he stayed.

He then drank poison and died to carry out his sentence.

K is for thinkers

Greek thinkers developed Science and mathmatics.

Thinkers pondered deep questions about truth.

Many myths showed off the greek religious beleifs.

Greek mytholgies heroes were demigods, or half-gods.

Greek gods often acted like children

playing jokes on one another.

N is for Trojans

The oracles were rooms used by priests to tell the greeks their future.

An oracle sat at an ancient shrine and spoke for the gods.

Two of the major lyrical

poets were Sappho and

Pindar.

Two of the oldest peices of literature are Homers Iliad and The Odyssey.

The Greeks constructed a massive wooden horse to trick the Trojans in order to get into their walls.

The Iliad tells the story of the prince of troy falling in love with the wife of the greek king.

Priest/priestess would sit on a stool and listen to questions And would translate the answers.

The Trojans lost the Trojan war after the Greek suprise atttack.

The most famous oracle was the oracle at the temple of Apollo at Delphi.
