- setting high standards to all students
- to recieve federal state funding, states had to give assessments to all students at select grade level
- In first grade, we had to learn the basic sign language
- I would always go home and sign to my parents to practice
- Can be used in the deaf culture

- In fourth grade, I had a new student in my class that was from Mexico
- I decided to get to know her and learn some spanish
- It was hard for her to adjust to English, so I helped her as much as I could
2013
- My sophomore year in high school, one of my classes had a foreign exchange student that stayed for a semester
- She was from China
- She barely spoke English

- My random roommate sophomore year of college was from Ethiopia
- She spoke Amharic
- It was really awesome to hear a language I had never heard of before
- She made phone calls to her parents or grandparents and would speak in Amharic
