- Started off supporting his family and helping his brothers attend college as a shoe cobbler.
- Went on then to become a surveyor and merchant before he was encouraged to become a lawyer by his neighbor

- Sherman’s education did not get further than the basic grammar school and then on to his father’s extensive library as well as growing up with a Harvard educated minister, Samuel Dunbar.
