FRONT OF THE CLASS

FRIEDRICH FROEBEL

Froebel developed "kindergarten" which simply means...children's garden. A kindergarten was a school for early childhood education.

Froebel developed kindergarten as an environment in which a child's "spirituality" could be actualized through activity. Froebel was from Germany and believed each country should grasp hold of their nation's stories, songs, and fables. He was a student at Pastalozzi's school (teacher training program) from 1808-1810. Froebel wanted teachers to be sensitive to children's readiness and needs rather than taskmasters who did nothing but recite inforamtion and demanded students to memorize facts and words they didn't even understand.

YOU ARE A MASTERPIECE

Jeremiah 1:5: Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

Psalm 139:13-16: For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and

wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be.

FRONT OF THE CLASS

Maria Montessori

Maria Montessori (Italian Educator) developed an internationally popular method of educating children. Montessori believed (like Pestalozzi and Froebel) that a child's early life experiences had an important formative and continuing influence on their lives. Montessori challenged sexist stereotyping and fought for the rights of women to be included in professional education. She was eventually admitted to the University of Rome and was the first female in Italy to received a

Doctor of Medicine degree.

Montessori

Montessori's contributions to educational practices today helped emphasize that early childhood education has a strong power over an individual's adult development. The major contributions she made include:

  • Concept of sensitive periods, or phases of development, when children are ready to work with materials that are useful in sensory, motor, and cognitive learning
  • Belief that children are capable of sustained, self-directed work in a particular skill
  • Emphasis on the school as part of the community and the need for parent participation and support.

Montessori established a school, the Casa dei Bambini, for poor children from the slums of Rome. She developed a prepared environment that presented various methods, materials, and activities based on the observations she previously made regarding children and their academic needs. She believed children possess a need to work at what interests them without the influence of teachers and without rewards or punishments. She believed children's ability to learn led them to begin reading and writing on their own initiative.
