Interpretation: Key Themes
The ballad of Charlotte Dymond was based of a
true story and is about the couple of Matthew weeks and Charlotte Dymond and their relationship. In this story Matthew is not all Charlotte thinks he is.
- Charlotte leaves her house with Matthew, wearing diamond redcloth they go to the marshes for a walk
- Matthew pulls out a blade and slits her throat
- He then runs, her body is discovered and he is wanted for questioning
- He is taken to court, his sentence is death.

Analysis: Charlotte
- "Carried a green gauze handkerchief" - This is alliteration and it also gives a vivid picture.
- "In her purse he pride" - this is a metaphor it tells us that she had quite a sum of money, because in the time of this ballad women were treated differently to men.
- "She was gentle" and "She was guiltless" - tells us that she was innocent on didn't deserve to die. It also tells us tells us how paranoid or radical Matthew is.
- "Her skin was as soft as sable" - is a simile it tells us she is peaceful and once again didn't deserve to die.

- "Why do you sit so sadly your face the colour of clay." - this is a metaphor as his face is not the colour.
- "Matthew says she was guiltless." - This proves he was irrational.
- "With her crippled lover." - Shows he is crippled. We think the fact that Matthew was crippled mad him paranoid, and thought if he wasn't good enough for Charlotte no-one was.
- "In the April rain" - suggests it is damp and wet, it is also uses poetic fallacy to set a mood.
- "Out beyond the marshes" - this would mean it’s quite boggy,
- "Through the Sunday mist" - suggests it is foggy and possibly in the morning hours,
- "The bog that like her life away’ - Is personification it also tells us that she died in the bog
