Focus/Emphasis
- the theme, character, problem, event, moment in time, or centre of visual interest
- gives purpose to a drama
- can be created through sound, by pointing, using space, etc.
Relationship
- relationships are central to the action in drama
- The connection(s) between people, events, or circumstances
- relationships between people
- the relationship between people and ideas
- the relationship between people and the environment
Time and Place
- The setting, time period , duration, and sequence of the action of a story or drama
- past, present, future
- over one day, one week, one year, etc.
- in a room, on a beach, etc.
Remember that drama is
AN ART!
The elements of drama can be manipulated (i.e. you make choices) to
create more meaningful, interesting and entertaining works of art.
Tension
- A heightened mental or emotional state resulting from uncertainty about how the conflict or problem in a drama will be resolved
- can be created through timing or blocking
- As the audience anticipates certain outcomes in the plot, the tension builds
- An obvious example of rising tension is in a mystery or whodunit
Character/Role
Elements of
Drama
- taking on a role requires performers to accept the physicality, attitudes and beliefs of the characters they are playing
- consider the characters background, motivations and point of view
- consider how the character moves, and how they might sound
- make choices that create a strong character who has purpose in the drama
