What does research say about cellphones and youth?

  • Research shows that 22% of children from the age 6 to 9 have a cellphone or access to cell phone usage.
  • 60% of kids from ages 10-14 also currently have cellphones and access to other technological devices, and a whopping 80% of children over 15 are given cellphones as well.
  • Teens with cellphones has steadily increased from 18% to nearly 40% since 2004.
  • What is an appropriate age to give a child a cellphone?
  • Survey says most parents give their children cellphones by sixth grade. Most decide it is a good idea from a safety standpoint.

  • Doctors in research have been concerned that over-exposure to screens has an impact on attention span and concentration.
  • Tablets and smart phones take time away from other activities. The youth should have more time playing outdoors, reading, or using their imagination with free play.
  • Studies suggest that technology limits face-to-face interactions, kids social skills may be negatively affected , and this may blind them from understanding the emotions of other people.
  • Low achieving and low income schools kids are more vulnerable to screen distractions.
  • Kids who sleep near a “small screen” average 20.6 fewer minutes of sleep every night. Caused by the high levels of blue light emitted which depletes melatonin, a hormone linked to circadian rhythm.
