Relation to Concepts

English Spreading Theories

Instrumental and Interrogative Motivation

Lingua Franca

Bilingualism

Instrumental: Explains how people often learn language in order to accomplish something.

Interrogative: To learn a language in order to become an integrated member of a particular society.

The phenomenon of people using two or more languages regularly

Is a language spoken by people who do not share

a native language.

ELF (English as a Lingua Franca)=the use of English as a medium to communicate.

Means "Frankish Language",from Italian in the 17th century.

Language Currency

Refers to the value of a language, it can be financially and intellectually.

  • English cultural value.
  • Easier to learn (Ibrahim, 2005).
  • The HSBC bank ran a marketing campaign stating that there were five times more English speakers in China than people living in England.
  • Chinese number of speakers is due to its population.
  • Chinese universities are teaching their students English.

Culture

Divergence and Convergence

Divergence: Is the process of culture splitting off from each other, developing their use of language separately with less or even no contact.

It refers to the fine arts and a society´s appreciations of them.

Convergence: in linguistic describes what happens when people come together and accommodate for each other through their use of language.

English Growth

1,357 Billions

(Gamio, Noack, 2015)

My Prediction

Although other language may seem to be diversifying, tendencies seem to point to a future with less languages, more variations and slang, and English spreading more (and maybe at some point evolving into a new language).

"By 2115, it’s possible that only about 600 languages will be left on the planet as opposed to today’s 6,000. Japanese will be fine" (Mchorther, 2015)
