The current drinking age is 21 because of the National Minimum Drinking Age Act.

MADD (mothers against drunk driving) was a main supporter of this bill that helped it get pushed through.

Presidents of universites say the current drinking age standard promotes kids to drink in unsafe areas. Which in turn leads to unsafe binge drinking
The number of drinking related accidents for kids under 21 decreases drastically when the age standard to drink was bumped up to 21
Drinking has showed to have a negative impact on accademic acheivment.
Maybe the fact that young adults are inexperienced drinkers cause the accidents. Which in turn is just putting all the preessure on those of the age of 21.
