A prayer itself is one of the symbols of reconciliation because it used in a prayer ritual as a form of communication with God, to ask him for forgiveness and to cleanse our sins. The Act of Contrition is one example of a prayer that we use during the sacrament of reconciliation when asking for forgiveness.
Another symbol is sin itself. Its a symbol
in the sacrament of reconciliation because in
order to be forgiven, we
must admit to the things
we have done wrong. When
we confess our sins, it
turns us away from
sorrow it has brought
upon us and brings
out our love for
God.
God the father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of your son, you have reconciled the world to yourself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins. Through the ministry of the church, May God grant you pardon and peace. And I absolve you and your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Reconciliation is an attempt to imitate Jesus by being a sacrament of healing forgiveness, just like how Jesus was a healer and used to heal a lot of people.Baptism was thought to be the main means of reconciliation between God and a sinner.
When people abandoned the life of sin in baptism, they were considered reunited with God once and for all.Reconciliation used to be a community focused ritual but has since then become an individualized, private one.
Reconciliation is a way to restore our relationship with God after we've sinned. As long as we humble ourselves before God and ask him for forgiveness with all our hearts we will be forgiven. John 3:16 says this, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life." God loved us so much that he paid dearly with the life of his own Son, the highest price he could pay. Jesus accepted the punishment for our sins and paid the FULL price for it. Then he offered us new life that he had bought for us. In reconciliation we give Christ our sins and he gives us his righteousness and forgiveness. Only through Christ can we receive God's righteousness and so this is a very important sacrament since it helps us maintain our relationship with God.
Reconciliation is the forgiveness of sins after baptism (as we've already mentioned) and is granted through the priest's absolution. Forgiveness is granted by God to those who are truly sorry for their sins and come before God with humbled and open hearts. The main purpose is to restore our relationship with God through this ritual with confession, prayers and certain symbols which will be explained.Although some people may look at it that way it is not just merely a ceremony or simple ritual it is called a sacrament for a reason. That is because it is an outward and visible sign of spiritual divine grace (which is the definition of a sacrament).
Confession of Sin - Confessing our sins is one of the things that God wants us to do, but it is not the only thing. He also asks us to turn away from our sins and instead follow in God's path.
The Word of God - The words that God used which were intended to be a guideline for us to live our lives.
