Point of View analysis
- The story is starts off with the narrator giving a third person point of view but it is then later broken up into first person point of view in paragraph 4. As shown with the quote "I admit it. I'm five foot five, and when the Kobras slithered by, with or with Monk I shrank "(1).
Characterization analysis
- The conflict is that there is a gang known as Klutter's Kobras and that they and Monk Klutter rule the school. Everybody knows and has to rule under their rules, such as a pass to even get through the halls ["... you couldn't even go to the rest room... without a pass.. a pass that cost anywhere up to a buck... (1)."], except a girl named Priscilla Roseberry.
- Priscilla was characterized directly in paragraph 10 where Priscilla is described as "And very calm, as only the very big can be."
- Monk was characterized indirectly in paragraph 3 where his attire was described, "A pile-lined suede battle jacket with lizard- skin flaps over tailored Levi's..."
- Melvin was characterized indirectly in paragraph 9 where he is just mentioned as being "Melvin's one of the smallest guys above midget status ever seen."
- Theme of the Story: never judge a book by it's cover (we infer that Monk won't take down Priscilla because she is a girl but you know how that turns out) and that good will override evil, even if it seems like there's no hope.
Setting analysis
- School, winter ["...it snows all that night, a blizzard... and school for a week(2)."]
