Development of the city of Vancouver- Gastown

Personalities

Great Fire

John Deighton (Gassy Jack) was born on November 1830- May 2 in Hull, England. He was the owner of a bar called " Globe Saloon ". Gastown,a neighborhood in Vancouver British Columbia is named after him.

The great fire had destroyed part of present day Vancouver. It happend on June 13 1886, it was supposed to clear land but had gotten out of control putting many lives in danger. Four days after the fire new buildings had begun building. It was rebuilt with modern water, electricity and a streetcar system.

Industry

The industries of Gastown were, Pioneer Mill and Hastings Mill. The first mill that was made in Gastown was called Pioneer Mill, 2 years later Hastings Mill was made. These two mills were the general center of trade. Warehouses were made on the North side of Burrard.

Transportation

The biggest Transportation system were the Canadian Pacific Railways. It was founded in 1881, It helped transport goods across Eastern Canada and British Columbia. The second transportation system in Gastown was the streetcars. The streetcars were made right after the great fire

Commerce

Gassy Jack's "globe saloon" bar opened 20 years before the great fire. It was in the Burrard inlet. The Burrard inlet was where all the townpeople would gather up and trade goods. Famous and business hub because of seaport hastings sawmill, Canadian Pacific railway terminal station, Europe hotel, Leckie building, Byrnes block, dominion hotel, Holland block, Hudson house, Horne block. All these sites were built to give Gastown historical figure.
