Power Matters

What do you understand about power?

Who’s Got the Power?

If you have power, what will you do for yourself?

The Core Concept

Power dynamics refers to differences in power across social groups representing our diversity. These dynamics potentially affect a person’s life prospects. Understanding power dynamics is important in appreciating the relationship between diversity and fairness.

Does the distribution of power differ among the diverse groups in our society?

Multiple me

Fairness is a complex moral concept related to equity that emerges early in human development. The ability to be fair means that a person detects inequalities that may not be justified.

This ability is very subjective and varies with cultural context and situations. Equity is possible when situations are fair.

Intersectionality- is the term social scientists use to describe the way these different social groups come together in us to form our identity.

Equity refers to whether groups are treated in a way that does not impose economic, social, or other barriers that would prevent them reaching their full potential. Equity does not mean all persons will be treated equally but that they will be treated fairly.

The Core Concept

Power and privilege represent complex social processes made all the more complicated in diversity contexts.

Power dynamics is a term we use to represent how power is acquired and maintained, and the complex relationships among diversity status, power, and privilege.

Social power is the ability to control assets and the access that others have to those assets.

A leader is a person who manages others. Leaders typically use three types of power to exercise control:

(a) legitimate authority that comes from the leader’s position;

(b) coercive power, based on threats or actual punishment; and

(c) reward power, which is the positive opposite of coercive power

People who has the social power will have the social privilege- access to resources, opportunities, and possibilities that are not easily available to others.

Do you have this power as an individual?
